Why Work in Care?

Have you ever considered working in care?

You may be wondering if you have got what it takes. The good news is that if you are a compassionate person, motivated by helping others, you probably do! The best thing about a career in care, which you may not realise is that you do not usually need any specific qualifications to get started. By joining the Apollo Project, you will receive all the necessary training to kickstart your journey into care. You can even gain qualifications as you go. Changing to a career in care is a popular choice for anyone who wants to change direction from their current role as you will have undoubtedly have the necessary transferable skills that will help you develop in other job roles within the care sector. This is also a great option for students to consider if they are at the beginning of their career path.

What are the skills needed to work in care?

You must have a drive to help others and a generally positive outlook on life. Working in care involves helping people deal with difficult situations with dignity and comfort, a smile goes a long way too! Plus, it’s always a bonus if you have a good sense of humour.

Having patience and adaptability are also important. Working in care is never boring and things can change quickly.  If you can stay calm and think on your feet you are already on the way to making a positive difference to someone’s life and having a successful career.

Good communication skills are essential for a care worker.  You will need to be able to interact effectively with those within your care, as well as the family members and friends of the person you are caring for, as well as your colleagues.

Looking at transferrable skills

Many people will choose to transfer to care from a previous role. There are so many transferable skills which help people to move into a career in care:

  • Communication: Care workers need to be able to understand and communicate effectively with people they are caring for as well as their families, colleagues and other professionals. Excellent communication skills will put you in good stead to work in care.
  • Emotional Intelligence: Care workers need to be able to understand and empathise with the feelings of those they are caring for. Emotional intelligence is an essential transferable skill for carers.
  • Problem Solving: Care workers need to be able to think of their feet to find solutions for difficult situations. Carers will put problem solving skills from other job roles or studies to good use.
  • Flexibility: Care work care can be unpredictable, care workers must adapt quickly to changing situations, similar to many other jobs.
  • Organisation: Care workers need to be able to manage their time, resources and paperwork efficiently. Organisational skills from other jobs are very useful.

So, is care the right profession for you?

There is so much variety when it comes to care – more than most people would think. Do you enjoy working in a team? Learning from others? A care role in a residential facility would be perfect for you.

Or do you thrive in a quieter environment, developing strong one to one relationships? You will love working in domiciliary care.

The flexibility nature of care means you can always make it work for you. Have other commitments? Shift work will let you structure your time appropriately.

Many people move to work in care because if offers a refreshing change from the nine-to-five routine of other jobs. Working in care is an active, exciting career that offers plenty of opportunity for progression.

Whatever your specialist skills, if you want a career that gives you genuine job satisfaction, consider care.  It is not always easy. It will never be dull and you will be able to make a meaningful difference in the day-to-day life of others. Seeing people smile is such a rewarding and special part of the job.
